Before any garage solution will work, it’s necessary to figure out how it got out of control.
Throughout this website, I’ll offer insights, solutions, products and support to help reclaim and reorganize the garage. No blame and nothing wrong – just a garage that’s unusable.
Our need to hang on to things we accumulate is the basis of our garages becoming inaccessible (duh!). We accumulate stuff for all kinds of reasons – all leading to the garage becoming what it is today – a chore to be avoided.
Some of the obvious reasons or circumstances that lead to this level of clutter include:
- No more room inside the house
- Storing stuff for others
- Keeping stuff for sentimental reasons
- Keeping stuff that is too good to get rid of
- Future projects
- Collections of food, clothes, antiques, tools, sport gear
When we use the garage to store our ‘overflow’ without sufficient garage cabinets and storage, we use any open space to hold stuff. Eventually, the stuff gets in the way of getting in and out of the car and it becomes easier to park the car in the driveway or on the street than dealing with the stuff.
This then frees up even more unorganized space that then gets filled up with more stuff.
It’s just too easy to drop stuff and organize it later.
BUT…later never comes!
So now the clutter has turned the garage into a task bigger than anyone wants to deal with.
Garage solutions is about regaining control of your garage space so that it can be used again – a garage makeover.
Whether it’s wall shelving, ceiling storage, integrated storage systems, modular units or even building a small storage shed off the garage – it all starts with being able to get rid of clutter.
First…reduce the volume!
Donate it, throw it away or have a garage sale – you must make a decision to reduce the volume of stuff you want to keep and then create enough storage to hold it all.
Second…start small!
Don’t take on the whole job at once. Pick a shelf, a cabinet, an area, draw a circle on the floor. Anything you can do to divide the job into manageable pieces.
